A Positive Way To Respond To The Coronavirus

3/10/2020

Being human means being regularly aware of the fact that we will not live forever, that death will come for us all eventually.  I personally would not mind transferring my mind to an awesome robot body and living forever - but the tech for that is not there yet.  When Apple gets around to inventing that, if we are still here, we can look into that eternal life option.  In the meantime, in 2020, we are faced with a pandemic - the Coronavirus.  I will leave it to the doctors and scientists to advise on how we should handle it as a physical health challenge - but there is another dimension to this illness that I would like to address - our mental response to it.  How we face danger can make that danger feel larger than it actually is or it can make us stronger both as individuals and as the great human family as a whole.

The Coronavirus is a symbol for illness and death in our minds.  What is the best way to respond to such stimuli?  First, we should be glad that we exist - that we are alive - and that we have existed and enjoyed life in the past.  And, we should remember, as we humans have survived hundreds of thousands of years of troubles on Earth as modern humans, and millions of years in our pre-modern human ancestor forms - that most likely our species will survive this threat - that our likeness will continue to roam this planet for many years to come.  And we should look at the Coronavirus threat as an opportunity to practice compassion, loving behavior, and kindness towards other humans - those who are affected by the illness and those who are vulnerable to it.

Be glad that you exist in this universe - which is some mysterious type of miracle that we do not yet understand - and look at the Coronavirus threat calmly, use it to re-connect with your awareness of the transitory nature of life, and use it to behave in a compassionate way towards others.  All challenges are opportunities to become better individuals.  As individuals who belong to a great species, we can use the current situation to deepen our appreciation for existence and connect in a greater way with our fellow humans - that's how we win mentally and spiritually over the Coronavirus.
